MirrorTab: Securing Web Apps Using Hologram Technology

This case study explores the "hologram technology" from MirrorTab for secure web app access, particularly for sensitive applications like banking. The application uses Visionular's AI-powered video encoders to ensure a seamless, high-quality experience at low bitrates, indistinguishable from actual web-based browsing. The internet fuels our modern lives, connecting us to information, services, and opportunities at our fingertips. With a single click, we manage finances, access healthcare portals, and even shop online. However, lurking beneath this convenience lies a hidden danger: browser extensions. These seemingly harmless add-ons, promising grammar perfection, coupon alerts, and productivity boosts, come at a steep price: your sensitive data.Extensions,...

AV1 Encoder Optimization from the Decoder’s Point of View

Demuxed 2020 was a “don’t miss” event. More than 1,000 video engineers participated, and 28 video engineers, codec developers, and image scientists from Netflix, Disney, Facebook, Apple, LinkedIn, Akamai, Fastly, Cloudflare, VideoLan, and Visionular shared best practices, open-source projects, and the latest industry development trends in video. Our very own Zoe Liu presented a talk about optimizing an encoder from the perspective of the decoder. Video engineers understand the importance of ensuring playback stability and the role that the encoder plays. AV1 contains more than 100 coding tools as compared with its predecessor VP9. This is the key to AV1’s significantly improved coding...

state of the AV1 video coding standard in Q4 of 2020

AV1 Had a Huge Q4 – Ten Updates

Since the founding of Visionular, we have been passionately focused on building the AV1 standard by developing the best AV1 codec implementation possible. Aside from assembling the largest dedicated group of codec engineers in the industry, we have taken every opportunity to promote the AV1 standard as active members of the AOM. In the fourth quarter of this year, the team was especially busy. Here are a few of the more notable AV1 centric activities that we led or took part in. In October, Mark Donnigan moderated a panel at the RTE2020 virtual conference titled “Selecting The Best Video Codec To Scale Your Apps for RTE” where he was...

Dan Rayburn: Continuous Innovation is a Competitive Strategy

Dan Rayburn recently quoted me in an article he wrote titled, “Continuous Innovation Is a Competitive Strategy: Why 870 Million Monthly Users in Asia Depend on HEVC and AV1 Codec Standards.” When writing this blog post, I feel proud that in December 2020, Visionular is now supplying essential video encoding solutions to more than thirty leading video streaming app companies, services, and hyperscale platforms. The use cases span RTC and other low latency real-time applications, as well as VOD. Companies like Google,, Mobiuspace, ShareChat, Firework, H3C, Juphoon, Lomotif, Jumu, NetEase, SHAREit, TAL, Baidu, and others utilize our codec solutions to maintain...

Exploring the AV1 Image Format AVIF

TL;DR: AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. AVIF is an extraction from the keyframes of the AV1 codec developed by Alliance for Open Media (AOM). AVIF is compatible with HDR images, and it supports 10- and 12-bit color at full resolution. AVIF offers image compression that is up to ten times higher than popular formats like JPEG. AVIF is an excellent choice because: The AV1 codec standard and AVIF format are royalty-free. AVIF is supported by all Chromium browsers (Chrome 85 on) using content negotiation.  Microsoft Windows 10 supports AVIF from the 19H1 update. AVIF is backed...

TL;DR: Watch this video to get the essential data in 34 seconds. Here’s what you are going to see: Aurora1 beats the venerable NVIDIA NVENC HEVC encoder that is built-in to the popular Tesla 4 by delivering the same quality or higher at exactly half the bitrate (5Mbps for 1080p60). In order to compare appropriately, Aurora1 was operated in its real-time mode as required for cloud gaming and live streaming services.Video engineers seeking to optimize the quality of video that they stream face many challenges. Everything from the codec standard selected to the choice of resolution and bitrate to the...

AV1 For WebRTC – New Benchmarks

In part 1 of this article, we introduced the AV1 codec for Real-Time Communications (RTC) by comparing our Aurora1 AV1 encoder with x264 and libvpx-VP9 operating on the Snapdragon 845. In Part 2, we update the results by comparing our Aurora1 AV1 encoder with x264 and add OpenH264 and libaom-RT. Codec implementations and their performance, quality, and efficiency vary, still, there is nothing they can do to increase the number of coding tools available. An advanced codec will always provide higher compression efficiency and better operational modes than a legacy standard. As Chrome 90 Beta has fully integrated AV1 with WebRTC, many video conferencing platforms and applications are evaluating AV1...

How To Deliver HDR-Like Video In An SDR Package

What is Pseudo HDR?  HDR, or High Dynamic Range video retains more detail in an image’s brightest and darkest portions than standard dynamic range (SDR). It also displays a broader gamut of colors and texture.   Some of the limitations of HDR are less about the footage itself and more about the infrastructure required to view it. For example, many devices still do not support HDR footage.  Add to that the higher bandwidth needed to deliver it and you have significantly limited who can watch HDR originated or produced content.  Visionular provides HDR-like quality video while keeping it in an SDR format. We refer...
